International Building Code 2018

After nearly a decade, Pennsylvania’s building codes were updated on October 1, 2018 which amends the edition of the International Building Code (IBC) 2015 model code. The updates incorporate changes to standards for fire safety, insulation and building materials in new construction and major renovations.

Originally omitted in the update, the Elevator Smoke Protection provision was issued an emergency regulation by the Department of Labor and Industry, and has been relocated by the IBC on Chapter 30, Section 3006 – Elevator Lobbies and Hoistway Opening Protectives. VIEW CHAPTER 30

Building types that must comply to the Elevator Smoke Protection Code requirements:

  • Apartments
  • Condos
  • Dorms
  • Hotels
  • Hospitals
  • Assisted Living
  • Group Homes
  • Jails and Detention including Courthouses and Police stations
  • High Rise Buildings 75’+
  • Non sprinklered Buildings more than 3 stories
