CASE STUDY
From Concept to Completion: Renlita Raises the Roof at the Javits Center
Where on earth would a one-acre, working farm fit on Manhattan’s west side? The answer is the striking new four-season rooftop pavilion at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The massive $1.5 billion expansion, designed by Moody Nolan, tvsdesign, W X Y architecture + urban design and Lendlease Turner joint venture is turning heads. The innovative design, packed with sustainable elements has achieved LEED Gold certification.
Built in 1986, the convention center underwent a series of facelifts and interior upgrades, including the construction of the River Pavilion several years ago. The latest addition to the world class, busiest convention center in the US, increases the event space by 1.2 million sq ft.
W X Y architecture + urban design, Lendlease Turner and W&W Glass, LLC headed up the “The Pavilion on the Farm” portion of the project. With views of the Hudson River, terrace and giant green roof, this unique 15,000 sq ft venue combines innovative design and sustainability. The striking transparent pavilion alone can accommodate 1,500 people.
W X Y architecture + urban design specified the Renlita S-3000 Two-Leafed Overhead Foldaway/Bifold Door. Made in the USA, the dramatic Renlita Custom Opening measures a jaw-dropping 41’ wide x 17’ tall and weighs over 9000 lbs. The Renlita door uses precise mathematical calculations to achieve exact counterweight balance. The Renlita S-3000 folds along a central hinge as it moves upward, coming to rest in a horizontal configuration directly below the header. Standard features include a photo eye safety sensor and heavy-duty safety brake.
Designed to stand up to the variety of weather conditions the city faces, the Renlita custom color finish door is constructed with rectangular structural steel sections, outfitted with full perimeter weather seals, a solid 10” aluminum threshold, truss frame design and custom stainless-steel turnbuckles on the lower panel. For ease of operation, simple touch screen control operates the counterweight balanced door via the fast and quiet GDI/XHD motor.
The Renlita custom opening provides incredible views of the outdoors, lets in abundant natural daylight and brings the outdoors in.
The convention center’s green roof is abuzz with 5 bee hives, and home to 35 bird and 5 bat species. Fortunate convention goers will soon enjoy fresh farm to (convention center) table meals, a healthy break from the usual grab and go fare.
We are beyond thrilled and so proud to have played a part in this incredible project with W X Y architecture + urban design, Lendlease Turner and W & W Glass, LLC.

If you’re unable to venture over to the Javits Center, visit our showroom in Bergen County, NJ to see the Renlita S-3000. It’s smaller in scale, but worth the trip to see it operate in person, along with a host of other space management solutions throughout our showroom. We look forward to your visit!
