Making Space for Everyone: Inclusive Design Solutions at LifeTown Center

LifeTown is a groundbreaking 53,000-square-foot fully inclusive and accessible center that is redefining how individuals with special abilities and their families experience life. As a hub of recreation, education, and therapeutic play, LifeTown offers a diverse array of programs designed to celebrate the unique strengths and perspectives of every individual. Whether through educational initiatives, job training, or vibrant social events, LifeTown’s impact resonates deeply within the community of Livingston, NJ.

In alignment with their mission, ModernfoldStyles was honored to partner with LifeTown to install a Modernfold Acousti-Seal Encore Single Partition. This innovative space management solution helped create a flexible, functional space in LifeTown’s half-court room.

Working with LifeTown Livingston, this installation featured 11 Modernfold Acousti-Seal Encore Single Panels, specifically selected for their utility in a dynamic, multi-purpose environment.

These panels are supported by a robust #RT100 track system painted in off-white and dual counter rotating nylon trolleys, which ensure smooth operation and effortless reconfiguration, even with frequent adjustments by staff and volunteers.

The stacking track was configured in two rows, allowing the panels to stack perpendicular to the side wall, which allows for convenient and efficient storage.

Designed with versatility in mind, the Acousti-Seal Encore provides the capability to create multiple room configurations, which is ideal for LifeTown, where spaces are frequently reimagined to host events, educational sessions, and social gatherings.

The panels achieve an impressive STC of 54, which ensures privacy and top-notch noise control between the divided spaces when simultaneous programs are conducted at LifeTown.

The automatic top seals and Sureset manual 2” bottom seals work together to create a tight acoustic barrier, further enhancing sound isolation and maintaining a distraction-free environment for participants.

To operate the system, the panels utilize a combination of an expandable crank handle, hand pull, and crank seal – all matched to the sleek black finish of the hinge and trim. These elements were chosen not only for their functionality but also for their visual cohesion with the overall system.

This Encore System was constructed with steel skins and featured two different finishes to complement each of the rooms. Facing the half-court gym, the panels were finished with a Soraya Arctic fabric that matched the room’s existing aesthetic. Meanwhile, the other side of the panels overlooking the event space was finished with COM 20943 Vinyl: Naturale Pellegrino, creating a durable yet elegant surface.

Helping to support the movable system, the jamb was wrapped with the same finish as the panels to ensure a seamless, cohesive look. The painted off-white color, combined with black hinge and trim details, contributes to a modern and neutral design that complements the welcoming atmosphere of LifeTown.
