Raising the Stakes: The House Wins Yet Again with Modernfold Acousti-Seal Grand Ballroom Transformation
Along the acclaimed New Jersey coast lies the Golden Nugget, a bayside hotel and casino boasting award-winning restaurants, lively nightlife, spectacular shows, beautiful water-front views, and more. Among their impressive amenities is a Grand Ballroom of almost 17,000 SF, able to seat up to 2,100 people that ModernfoldStyles first serviced in 2004 and recently revitalized with top-of-the-line Modernfold Acousti-Seal Premier partitions.
The facility opened in 1985 as Trump’s Castle but was later renamed the Trump Marina A.C. in 1997. It was sold to Landry’s in 2011 and rebranded to the Golden Nugget Atlantic City establishment it’s known as today.
Under its original ownership, the Golden Nugget’s Grand Ballroom was installed with partitions built on a DR 500 trolley and track, an omni-directional system with four different pockets and numerous layouts. This predecessor to our current RT 200 could make setting up and stacking panels difficult and confusing, similar to shuffling a deck of cards. As a result, ModernfoldStyles would periodically visit the ballroom to reorder the panels to their proper layout.
In 2013-2014, ModernfoldStyles installed custom weldments and trolleys to modify the system to a “switch and curve” type of weldment, eliminating the need to shuffle the partitions so that the panel layout would be corrected.
Despite the various owners and modifications, the client never looked for another supplier. Instead, our high-quality products and top-notch services ensured they didn’t hesitate to reach out when it was time to revitalize their Grand Ballroom. Since 2004, it has been a pleasure to work collaboratively with their team to replace the long-since discontinued product that was over 20 years old.
The new renovation involved Modernfold Acousti-Seal Premier of epic heights, standing at 19’ 11”. The panels were so tall that they were constructed in two sections, with steel reinforced spliced joints, and all of the 102 panels were assembled on site in the Grand Ballroom at the time of installation.
Once the existing track and folding partitions were removed, the panels were installed in four sections along a #14 track system, with two large sections dividing the ballroom front to back, and the other two sections coming across the room to connect to each other in the center, by using four-way track intersections.
The new track, hanger brackets, and hanger rods were furnished and installed along a steel frame construction that ensures stability for another 20 years.
To grasp the magnitude of the project, check out our remarkable 3D scan of one side of the facility:
The panels were created with medium-density fiberboard skins within welded steel frames, retaining a 50 STC to ensure multiple events occur simultaneously in this enormous space. In addition, Acousti-Seal was built with ten sets of double pass doors and four new pocket doors with recessed exit signs to allow Golden Nugget guests to pass between each designated space with ease.
The Acousti-Seal panels were finished with standard fabric, and smoke gray for the trim and hinge color was selected to blend in with the ballroom’s elegant design.
The partitions were also built with an expandable panel closure method to permit ease of use, a stark contrast to the complicated closing process of the product that preceded it. Check out our video below to see it in action!
